#iCompete247 #AthletesUnited featuring Katelyn Stokes

1. What motivates you, why do you compete?

As a tennis player and overall athlete, I feel as though I have not reached my full potential and that is what keeps me going. There is always room for improvement and I’m not the one to settle for complacency. Competition is almost like second nature to me, I love the feeling of winning and when I lose, I learn.

2. What makes you different from other athletes?

People like to tell me that I have a certain type of swag on the court during my matches. My on-court/training personality is very aggressive and confident and my off-court/training personality is modest and humble. I think I have a balanced mixture of both.

3. What are your keys to success in training? Any particular techniques help you get to the next level?

The most essential keys to success in training involve perseverance, positivity, passion, and fun. First things first, you have to realize that you are not perfect (no one is!) and you are bound to make mistakes. However, you cannot let those mistakes define you, you must learn to push through even when it looks like a dead end. Stay positive! You must understand that everything you pursue will be tough but worth the process, you got this! You must love and have fun with what you do, if you don’t you will not put forth the appropriate effort to succeed. Life is too short!

I’m a realist and sometimes it is hard for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but what keeps me on track is reflecting on my journey from beginning to present. I am stronger, faster, smarter, and wiser every single day; if I don’t remind myself of that, I will go crazy.

4. Who is your number 1 Fan?

My #1 fan involves two people, mom and dad of course! They have been through it all with me because they want and still want what is best for me. I am forever grateful for their love and support, without them I’m not sure of where I would be!

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

Honestly, this may sound a bit cliché but the best advice I have received was to believe in myself and know that I am capable of anything that I want to pursue. This advice allowed me to stay positive when things weren’t going my way.

6. Any Pre-training or pre-game rituals?

Of course! First I have to tape up my slightly irritated joints if they are bothering me. Then the usual warm up jog and dynamic stretching. Afterwards, I try to intake as many fluids and potassium as possible. Lastly, I definitely cannot go on court without listening to some hip-hop music or any upbeat Beyoncé song.

7. Why does 24/7 Competition appeal to you?

It’s a great, resourceful way for athletes to communicate with other athletes. Networking plays a major role in our society today and athletes should easily have access to that.

8. How did you overcome any major obstacles/Injuries?

Thankfully, I was never severely injured. I just took proper care of the slight injuries that I did incur, by resting, icing, heating, stretching, etc. What also helped with overcoming any major mental obstacles was taking a small break from the sport and doing something else to keep my mind off of it.

9. What can you tell us about your current and future goals?

Since I graduated from college, I have been competing in some professional tennis tournaments. I hope to play a few more and get in the best shape of my life while doing so.
